Jay Kesler On Youth Ministry And The Academy: Lambert summarizes the keynote addresses given by Dr. Jay Kesler at the tenth annual AYME conference in Boston, Massachusetts. The themes of Kessler's presentations included the affect of youth ministry on the academy, the affect of the academy on youth ministry, and the future of youth ministry education.
Empowering The Vocation Of Youth As Youth: Is youth ministry an agent of the cultural status quo or an agent of the Kingdom of God? While the answer to this question may seem obvious, the evidence suggests that youth ministry has for too long functioned unreflectively in support of the dominant institution of adolescence. Youth ministry has largely viewed its role as supporting parents, teachers, and culture in general in helping young people maintain their place in this cultural system. However, Christian theology provides clues to alternate ways of appreciating young people and their role in our communities. This essay explores these clues and initiates a reconstruction of a theology for youth ministry that takes seriously the charisms of youth.
Horace Bushnell, Theodore Cuyler, And Francis Clark: By examining the lives and ministries of Horace Bushnell, Theodore Cuyler, and Francis Clark, Senter seeks to discover how these three men have helped to shape our view of modern youth ministry. Although their differences were great, it is possible to see how their interactions were formative in the development of youth ministry. One is challenged to consider the necessity of the skills these men possessed for modern youth ministry to survive.
Youth Ministry Education And The Liberal Arts: This article emphasizes the importance of integrating faith, learning, and living, exploring the place of the liberal arts in Christian higher education. Students who enter Christian colleges and universities have not intentionally integrated their faith and life; educators need to guide students in this process without making the assumption that integration has already occurred. Further consideration is given to the interaction of youth ministries and the liberal arts while providing models of integrative applications.
Defining Student Leadership: A Literature Review The term "student leadership" has become a recent buzzword that holds many different meanings to many different people. White sets out to establish a solid definition for the term that he hopes will be accepted by writers and practitioners in youth ministry. In order to do this, he compares and contrasts definitions of student leadership in current literature with the definition given by J.C. Rost.
A Global Youth Pastor Salary Survey: Youth ministries professors are acutely aware of the cost of a formal education. This study attempts to discover whether or not professional youth workers around the globe are compensated in a way that allows them to live at the same socio-economic level as their congregants. Further consideration is given to how sociology and ecclesiology affect salaries.
The Role Of Young People In Christian-Muslim Dialogue Based on personal interaction and observation, Smith seeks to discover the frequency with which students participate in active dialogue concerning other faiths, why they might be hesitant to participate, and how they can be included in future interfaith dialogues. The importance of the role of the youth worker in providing opportunities for dialogue and the need for students to learn how to discuss their faith with others are considered. |
